ICC Awards 2016: ODI Team, Test Team, Cricketer of the Year & More

ICC Award is one of the most prestigious awards for any cricketer and the year 2016 ICC Awards is taking place today, 22nd December 2016. The awards will give based on performances in international cricket between 14 September 2015 and 20 September 2016. Cricketers are selected for the awards in several categories including Cricketer of the Year, Test Cricketer of the Year, ODI team of the year, Test team of the year and ODI Cricketer of the Year. The award selection panel include former Indian batsman Rahul Dravid, former South African opener Gary Kirsten and Sri Lankan stalwart Kumar Sangakkara.

The ICC has already declared New Zealand’s Suzie Bates as the Women’s ODI and T20I Player of the Year. South Africa’s Marais Erasmus named as the David Shepherd Trophy for the ICC Umpire of the Year 2016. Erasmus became the fifth umpire to win this prestigious award after Simon Taufel (2004 to 2008), Aleem Dar (2009-2011), Kumar Dharmasena (2012) and Richard Kettleborough (2013-2015).

ICC Spirit of Cricket Award 2016

Pakistan skipper Misbah-Ul-Haq won the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award and became the first Pakistan player to win the award. The past winners of the award are MS Dhoni (2011), Daniel Vettori (2012), Mahela Jayawardena (2013), Katherine Brunt (2014) and Brendon McCullum (2015).

Ravichandran Ashwin is the only Indian cricketer included in the ICC Test Team of the Year. The team features four English, three Australians and one from New Zealand, India, Sri Lanka and South Africa.

Virat Kohli has been named as captain of the ICC ODI Team of the Year 2016. The team features three Indian players including Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja.

Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Cricketer of the Year 2016

Ravichandran Ashwin won the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy (ICC Cricketer of the Year 2016) and has become the third India player to win this award. The previous winners of the awards are Rahul Dravid (2004) and Sachin Tendulkar (2010), Andrew Flintoff and Jacques Kallis (joint-winners in 2005), Ricky Ponting (2006 and 2007), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (2008), Mitchell Johnson (2009 and 2014), Jonathan Trott (2011), Kumar Sangakkara (2012), Michael Clarke (2013) and Steve Smith (2015).

ICC Test Cricketer of the Year 2016

Ashwin also won the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year and has become only the second India player after Dravid (2004) to win two awards in the same year.

ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year 2016

South Africa’s wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock has become the second South Africa player after AB de Villiers (2010, 2014 and 2015) to won the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year. He scored 793 runs in 16 ODIs with four centuries and a half-century.

ICC T20I Performance of the Year 2016

West Indies’s Carlos Brathwaite has won the ICC T20I Performance of the Year award for his match-winning 34 not out off 10 balls in the ICC World Twenty20 India 2016 final against England in Kolkata.

ICC Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2016

Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman has won the ICC Emerging Cricketer of the Year award. He played three ODIs and took eight wickets and 19 wickets in 10 T20Is. He is the first Bangladesh cricketer to win the ICC award.

ICC Associate and Affiliate Cricketer of the Year

Afghanistan’s flamboyant wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Shahzad has won the ICC Associate and Affiliate Cricketer of the Year.
