IPL 2017: Gujarat Lions’ Jason Roy hints at leaving IPL 10 mid-way

This season nothing is going in the favour of Gujarat Lions. They have not started well in this season. Their key player Bravo is injured and is out of the rest of the tournament. And now, their opening batsman Jason Roy could leave the side in the middle of the tournament. Jason Roy played in few matches and looked in brilliant form. In some of the matches, he did start the inning fantastic but failed to make a big score.

Gujarat Lions' Jason Roy

It seemed that Jason is frustrated with the amount of opportunity that he is getting at this moment. Jason Roy is an opening batsman but Gujarat Lions have already three world class opening batsman. Gujarat Lions have Brendon, Finch and Smith who have proven themselves in the past season. So, there is very little place for Jason Roy to fit in the plans of Gujarat Lions. The rule that at most 4 foreign players could play in one match also makes his addition a bit difficult.

ECB has announced the squad for the champions trophy. They also announced the squad for upcoming series against Ireland and South Africa. ECB has decided to give chance to Jason Roy in both of the series due to the absence of England’s key players Morgan, Ben Stokes, Josh Buttler who are the regular member of their side in the IPL.

In a talk with The Daily Mirror, Jason Roy said, I’m discussing with Andrew Strauss, whether to come back out here to the IPL or to get cracking with Surrey in the Royal London.”

He also said,” I think it is probably a good idea to get my head round 50-over cricket as much as possible especially if I’m not really playing a huge amount out here in India, it is just a bit of a waste really. I’m due to come back for the Ireland game and then after that, I could have three games for Surrey before the South Africa series. So that would be great preparation.”

Jason Roy has played only three matches for Gujarat Lions in this IPL season so far and is unlikely that he will get more chance as they already have a good batting lineup. With the inclusion of Irfan Pathan in their squad they would most probably go for James Faulkner who has more experience in the IPL and could prove to be handy both with the bat and bowl.
