Bengaluru: IPL franchise Rising Pune Supergiants have removed Mahendra Singh Dhoni from the team’s captaincy. Australian skipper Steve Smith set to replace Dhoni as the new captain of Pune-based franchise in the upcoming IPL 10.
For thousands of fans, the decision came as a shocker, especially a day before the IPL 2017 auction. The auction which supposed to held in Bengaluru on Monday.
Dhoni has extended his full co-operation and is ready to help Smith in decision-making on the field.
Dhoni expected to keep his place in the side, the wicketkeeper-batsman is likly to promote up the order.
Dhoni’s form was also a cause of concern for his side. He managed to score only 284 runs from 12 innings with only one fifty to his credit.
Rising Pune Supergiants owner Sanjiv Goenka said: “We wanted a younger captain. Dhoni continues to be a player in the squad. Steve Smith will be the new captain.”
Rising Pune Supergiants played their maiden IPL in 2016 and finished seventh in the eight teams points table. Dhoni leads the team in the ninth edition of IPL.
In the tournament, the Pune-based side had won only 5 matches out of 14, losing 9. The team managed to get only 10 points and finished above last placed Kings XI Punjab.
MS Dhoni most recently resigned from the post of Indian ODI team captain handing over the charges to Virat Kohli.
The 35-eyar-old former Chennai Super Kings captain is one of the most successful captains in the history of IPL.
As a skipper, Dhoni has won the IPL trophy twice and finished runner-up on four occasions as CSK captain.
Steve Smith, who is a highly experienced international captain, will take the mantle from the wicket-keeper in the upcoming season.
