Not sure if Dhoni is still a good T20 player, says Sourav Ganguly

Former Indian Captain Sourav Ganguly has spoken some harsh words about India’s former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Ganguly believes that MS Dhoni is a champion ODI player but he is no longer a good T20 player as he was back in the day.

“I am not too sure if MS Dhoni is a good T20 player. He is a champion ODI player but when it comes to Twenty20 cricket, in 10 years, he has got one fifty and that’s not the best record,” said Ganguly.

This backlash from the Prince of Kolkata came on the back of MS Dhoni’s below par performances with the bat until now in this season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

MS Dhoni has had a very good record in the shortest format of the game as he has scored 1209 runs in T20 Internationals with an average of 36.64 and has made 3299 runs in the IPL with an average of 38.81. But in this season of the IPL, he has had scores of 12, 5 and 11 in the three games he has played so far and has never looked in good nick even in those short stints.

MS Dhoni is regarded as India’s most successful captain and among the world’s best limited over players of all time and this is the first time in his career that he is playing IPL as a normal played as he was removed from the captaincy of Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) franchise by their owner before the start of this season.

Sourav Ganguly, however, believed that he should still be picked for the ICC Champions Trophy starting this June as he is still too good an ODI player to be ignored.

“I will pick Dhoni for the Champions Trophy but he has to score runs,” Ganguly said.

Former Australian greats Michael Clarke and Brett Lee also believed that MS Dhoni needs to change his approach towards batting.

“Dhoni has to score runs for himself. As a professional, he has to,” Clarke said.

“I think MS Dhoni should try and play his natural game. I am not going to sit here and say this is how he should bat because he has been a wonderful player batsman and captain. Just hope he can play his natural game,” said Lee.

Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) started this IPL pretty well but have lost their last 2 games and are now at 7th position in the points table. MS Dhoni and the team will look to have positive performances and results in the upcoming matches with their next game against Gujarat Lions at Rajkot tomorrow night.
