The most important domestic cricket tournament of the season, the Ranji trophy 2016-17 was started on October 6 and final is scheduled to take place on 12th January 2017 next year. This is the 83rd season of the India’s premier domestic tournament and this year many changes were made by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). For the first time, Chattisgarh is taking part in the tournament and all team will play a match at neutral venues which mean, no home matches. The group stages rounds were started on October 6 while the Quarter-final matches will start from December 24. All the teams were divided into three groups, i.e. Group A, B and C. Mumbai is the defending champions of the tournament and currently remains unbeaten after six matches and placed the top of the table in Group A while Karnataka and Andhra are leading the Group B and C respectively.
The top three teams from groups A and B and two teams from group C will qualify for the quarter-final of the tournament. The winners of quarter-final matches will advance to semi-finals. The final of Ranji Trophy 2016-17 will take place from 7th January 2017 onwards and venue for the quarter-final, semi-finals and final will be announced later by the BCCI.
