FIFA tournament Director Javier Ceppi have confirmed that Kolkata’s iconic Salt Lake Stadium will host the final of the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup. He said,” I am happy to announce that Kolkata has ten matches in the world cup. Kolkata will be the host of the final in the Under 17 World Cup” in a press conference in Kolkata.”
The iconic Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata also known as the Mecca of Indian football has witnessed many football matches but this time it’s a FIFA tournament and something that would put stadium on the world map as it is being renovated to match international standards by the state government. This was the main reason that Kolkata has been giving the opportunity to host the World cup Final.
Javier Ceppi further said,” This is the first time that India is hosting a FIFA tournament. It will be also the first time an Indian team will play in a FIFA competition. In recognition of the increasing excitement about the beautiful game in India, ‘Football Takes Over’ was the first and most fitting choice as the official slogan for the tournament.
“Soon we will open ticket sales and fans will have great opportunities to attend matches at discounted rates. We are expecting huge interest from football fans in this historical FIFA U-17 World Cup in India.” he added.
A total of 24 international teams will compete in six different cities, one of the teams being India, who have it to the prestigious junior tournament on account of being the hosts. Group A will have their matches in Navi Mumbai, while Group B matches will be held in New Delhi.
Goa will host group C ties and two Round of 16 games and one last eight encounters. Kochi will stage group D matches with one Round of 16 ties and a quarter-final. Guwahati will have the Group E matches, one Round of 16 games and one semi-final. Mumbai will have one Round of 16 game and a semi-final, Delhi will have two Round of 16 games.
Apart from India, who have qualified due to their standing as the hosts, the other qualified countries are Iran, Iraq, Japan and Korea DP, Brazil, Paraguay, Chile and Colombia, followed by New Caledonia and New Zealand.
Teams representing countries from Europe, North and Central America and the Caribbean and Africa will qualify in the coming months.
The draw for the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 will be held in Navi Mumbai on July 7.
