The I-League 2016-17 season features total 10 teams who will battle to win the title in four months long footballing action. According to I-League rules, each must have only four foreign players and only three can play simultaneously in the match. One of the four players has to be mandatory of Asian origin.

The league has suffered very tough time in recent years and this year too as Sporting Clube de Goa and Dempo SC has withdrawn their names from the tournament. Previous year, the league witnessed teams like Pune FC, Kalyani Bharat FC and Royal Wahingdoh and Dempo who won most I-League titles pull out their names from the tournament.
