Bajrang gives India it’s first gold at 2017 Asian Wrestling championship

Bajrang Punia became the hero of the nation last night after he gave India its first gold medal in the Asian Wrestling championship. He registered a fantastic victory over Korea’s Seungchul Lee in the 65 kg freestyle category on the penultimate day of the tournament. This is a great news for all the wrestling fans in India. On the other hand, in the women’s 58 kg category Sarita bagged the silver medal for the country.

Bajrang was down 2 points in the first round. It was looking like that India will have to satisfy with yet another silver medal this season but Bajrang had other ideas. He did not allow his opponent to run away with the points and kept playing a good game.

He pounced on the opportunity when it came and once he got the lead he was unstoppable. He went on to win the match by 6-2 which is a big margin when it comes to wrestling. He was in tears when the final hooter went on. He celebrated by taking the victory lap with the Indian flag on his shoulders.

It was the second half that saw Bajrang wiping out the lead and taking the lead. He was confident right from the beginning of the second half. He showed his attacking skills and put his opponent under a lot of pressure.

Bajrang said after the match,” My strength is my stamina. I tried to play along with my strength. I was told to attack more by my coaches and I followed the instructions.”

He also added’ A gold medal is very important for me. It cannot be compared to any other medal. This is my first gold medal in any major international tournament and I am very happy to achieve it.”

Yogeshwar Dutt, London Olympic bronze medallist was present on the sideline during this match. He said,” I told Bajrang to play his natural game and attack when the opportunity came along.” He also wished Bajrang for the gold medal as he told that winning gold at Asian championship is not an easy job.
