Roger Federer beats his arch-rival Rafael Nadal to clinch 3rd Miami Open Title with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. With the victory, the Swiss star has now claimed his third sunshine double and third big title of the year following his victories in Australian Open and Indian Wells.
Roger Federer has now defeated his nemesis Rafael Nadal for the third time this season and fourth in succession to claim his 91st career title and 26th Masters title, only behind Novak Djokovic (30) and Rafael Nada (28).
“For me, the dream continues, it’s been a fabulous couple of weeks. First in Indian Wells and now in Miami,” said Roger Federer.
“The atmosphere is very special, I’ve been coming here since the Orange Bowl when I became the world number one junior. “Thanks to my team, what a start to the year, I can’t believe it. Thank you again and thanks for last year when it wasn’t so good too,” he added.
For the Spaniard, it is a fifth defeat in the Miami final and a third final defeat of 2017.
“It’s disappointing for me that I have been trying during all my career. Every three years, I am here in this position but always with the smaller trophy. I am going to keep trying hard for the next couple of years. Hopefully I will not have to wait three more years to be in that position fighting again for the title,” he said.
Even though he has lost all three finals he has played this season, things looks bright for a firm clay court season.
“I’m playing enough well to fight for everything I think,” Nadal said. “I have good hopes that I going to be ready for Monte-Carlo. Always when I am playing that well, on clay it helps a little bit more for me. I need to work hard to be ready for that. If I am ready for that, I think I am very excited about playing on clay again.
“I think about resting a little bit, having fun a little bit in Mallorca and I’ll be happy to be back home after one-and-a-half months. Then I will start working hard on clay. That’s my goal now. My goal is to feel ready to play on clay again and I know if I have good preparation and have a healthy transition to the clay and find my rhythm on clay, I can be one of those candidates.”
It may look like a comfortable straight sets victory but it was a much closer affair than the score line suggest. Things started shaky on serve for both players as both had to fend off break points in almost every game till the end of opening 6 games.
But come the eighth game at 4-3, Federer finally broke Nadal and served out the set without much drama to take the first set 6-3.
The second set was also a tight affair but it was Nadal who did most of the running as he saved multiple break points with Federer holding his serve comfortably almost every time.
At 4-4 in the second, Federer broke Nadal with the help of some lady luck and some beautiful gets and then closed it out brilliantly with an emphatic backhand winner and a beautiful serve to clinch the title.
After the victory, Federer announced that he will be taking an eight-week break and will not be playing any clay court tune-ups before Roland Garros.
So, game now move on to the clay season starting with the Monte Carlo Masters which starts from 15th of April with Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray back in action.
